HELP NEEDED: COOKIES AND SNACKS FOR FORTY HOURS Our Forty Hours Social is Tuesday evening after the 7 pm Solemn Closing. We would appreciate HELP in providing cookies/snacks/desserts. Please bring food/refreshments to the Church Library Sunday, Monday or Tuesday. Thank you!. YEAR FOR PRIESTS Seminarians from this parish preparing for future orders is such a wonderful and fulfilling prospect for the life of the church whether for the diocese or universal church. Vocation promotion is a priority on many levels as we see growth in the consideration of priestly and diaconal responses to God’s call. Our women’s and men’s communities are also excited about the prospects for future ministry in our diocese. There seems to be a conscious effort among the parishioners of Holy Name to pray for vocations and to consider those who have already responded to priestly and religious vocations as having a valid and good experience, truly valuable for the human and spiritual dimensions of those involved. Parents need to address and encourage their children to consider a possible vocation to priestly service. There exists a dire shortage of priests within our own diocese. Additional parish closures, clusters or reconfiguration will continue at the inconvenience of our Catholic population if we soon do not experience an increase to priestly vocations. Daily pray for priestly vocations!!! ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL - GOAL $91,243.00 To date, 29% of parishioners have pledged $50,425.95 to the Annual Catholic Appeal. The Goal this year has been assigned to your parish based upon a $63.10 per household assessment. Parishioners capable of contributing a larger amount are encouraged to do so. Our goal this year is to achieve participation from every parishioner. Your participation is vital to the success of the ACA not only for these ministries, but for our own parish as well. Please make a gift that reflects your gratitude for God’s incredible blessings. Join me in returning your completed pledge card by placing it in today’s collection. If you are unable to make a financial gift, please return your pledge card indicating that; we will see that you do not receive a second request. NEW OPPORTUNITY - PARISH HAITI COMMITTEE To further enhance and support the bond with our sister Parish in Pandiassou, we have elected to establish a new Parish Haiti Committee. This committee will meet on a periodic basis, and working hand in hand with Kindred Journey Fund, Inc., will identify and implement specific local projects to benefit the peasants of Haiti and to strengthen our commitment to their cause. An initial task will be to examine the feasibility and minimum requirements for the establishment of group tours for parishioners and other interested parties which would allow people to see first-hand the tremendous daily challenges faced by the Haitian citizenry, as well to testify to the benefits of current programs financed through Kindred Journey. The inaugural meeting of this new committee will be held on Monday, October 5 at 7pm in the rectory conference room. Please consider this opportunity to offer your time and talent to this very worthwhile endeavor. Any questions, call Doug Tusing at 472-4257. ANNUAL MASS ATTENDANCE COUNT For the following four Sundays, October 4, 11, 18, & 25 a count of all worshipers attending Mass at Holy Name will be taken. The count will take place simultaneous to the offertory collection. The average for the four weeks will indicate the percentage of our total parish membership attending Mass regularly. That statistic will be compared with the results of the counts in the previous years. The final tabulations will be published in a future publication of this bulletin. NATIONAL LIFE CHAIN On October 4, 2009, Respect Life Sunday, there will be a LIFE CHAIN from 1:00-3:00PM along Route 219 and East Carroll St. in Carrolltown. Everyone in our area is invited to join with us, and with groups of people from across the United States, as we peacefully, prayerfully and silently stand and demonstrate our support for the sanctity of human life! Please come and pick up your signs in front of St. Benedict Church, Carrolltown. Refreshments will be served in the church hall after the Life Chain. Please join us. Sponsored by Citizens Concerned for Human Life. For more information, visit www.lifechain.net or www.prolifecambriasomerset.org. CHILDRENS' STEWARDSHIP - ENVELOPES The church is attempting to catechize the younger generation on the meaning of stewardship involving their time, talent and possessions. Parents need to share the role of catechizing their children in the proper attitude and spirit to share their talent, time and possessions for the greater honor and glory of God and His church. Children envelopes are distributed for this purpose, namely, to form (from the earliest ages) the personality in recognizing that everything we are or possess has the good Lord as its source. To train a child to be a loving and giving person rather than a self-centered individual is indeed a gift to the church. Regular use of contribution envelopes is one of many means of forming a catholic attitude and disposition of being grateful to God for so many blessings being currently experienced. Remind your children, always, with proper explanation, to use their church envelopes on a weekly basis. The new boxes of envelopes will be distributed to all school age children within the next week. ATTENTION BISHOP CARROLL STUDENTS AND CENTRAL CAMBRIA SENIORS All Bishop Carroll students and Central Cambria Seniors are asked to pick up their Students= Offertory Envelopes located on the tables in the back of church after all Masses this weekend. PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN (VIRTUS) TRAINING A Protecting God’s Children training session will be offered on Thursday, October 1 at Holy Name Church Hall. Anyone who works with or chaperones the youth of our parish, in any capacity, is required to take this training. It is only necessary to take this training once. The three hour session will begin promptly at 6:00PM. You may register prior to the session online at www.virtus.org. For questions, call Sarah Zearing 472-5631 or Susie McCombie 472-7893. ROSARY RALLY The Altoona-Johnstown Curia of the Legion of Mary cordially invites you to attend the annual Rosary Rally which will be held at Holy Name Church, Ebensburg on Sunday, October 11 at 3:00PM. The theme for 2009 is Let Us Pray the Rosary in Our Troubled World. The Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary will be depicted in a living tableau by children from area parishes. We look forward to seeing you during this annual celebration in honor of our Blessed Mother. STEWARDSHIP OF TIME - INVEST SOME TIME It seems that there is so much to do. Don’t let this get you down! You can’t do it all at once, but you can do each thing one at a time. You are encouraged to find time for God and His Work. Set priorities which answer the question, “What can I do to serve the Lord today?” Your decision to make God a part of your life will be your best decision for 2009. LIFELINES - EARLY HUMAN LIFE At ten weeks, the unborn child is already more than two inches long. His heart has been beating since 25 days. Brain waves can be read since 43 days. All body organs are present and working. This rapidly developing child is becoming extremely sensitive to sound, pressure, heat, light and pain. All that is needed now is nourishment and time to grow. CATHOLIC INQUIRY CLASSES SET FOR OCTOBER/NOVEMBER Now is the time to contact Sr. Margie now if you or someone you know is thinking of becoming Catholic. Classes begin Tuesdays 7 PM in the Church Library: October 6, 13 and 20; also November 11 and 17. It is important for RCIA candidates to try to attend all five classes. We welcome new participants and offer our prayers for three candidates who are committed to preparation for becoming Catholic this year at the Easter Vigil. For more information, call Sr. Margie, 472-8315. ALL EM, LECTORS, GIFT BEARERS, USHERS & GREETERS Pick up your new schedule in the Narthex (alphabetical order) for weekend ministries Oct-March 2009. OCTOBER 1: FEAST OF ST. THERESE OF LISIEUX It is a Carmelite tradition to add to your name one of the mysteries of the faith, for example: John of the Cross or Elizabeth of the Trinity. St. Theresa took two names, Therese of the Child Jesus and of the Holy Face. Her whole life was shaped by these two mysteries. Her spiritual doctrine of holiness, called “The Little Way,” is deceptively simple, for it is not easy to surrender our opinion even in small matters or to sacrifice our cherished way of doing things. Therese loved a painting she had seen of “Veronica’s Veil” depicting the suffering face of Christ. This devotion led her to combine her child-like approach to sanctity with heroic charity that comes to full maturity only by way of the Cross. The short but spiritually intense life of St. Therese bears witness to the integrity of her chosen name in Carmel and to the fruitfulness of these mysteries of faith at work in her. What mystery of the faith do you most identify with? Choose one, and privately add it to your own name. HOLY NAME JUNIOR HIGH YOUTH GROUP Youth in 6th, 7th, & 8th grade are invited to attend a corn maze on October 18, 2009. The group will be leaving at 5:30 PM from Holy Name’s parking lot. The cost is $5.00. All details and permission slips were sent home with students through Holy Name School and Holy Name’s Religious Education Program. Permission slips are due no later than October 7. For additional information call Darlene Walker 472-8089. ARE YOU WILLING TO HELP? The Youth Activities Committee is looking for your help. You may be willing to help on a regular basis, or just help with the event you really enjoy. Maybe you would enjoy helping with family events such as the Father/Daughter Dance, Mother/Son Sport Night, or Grandparents Bingo… Maybe you’d like to offer some time to the new Jr. High Youth Group. Whatever you can give is appreciated. Please call Sarah Zearing 472- 5631 for more information. APEX NEWS 1. PERMISSION FORMS are now available in the Narthex and on the website for the Murder Mystery at Old Bedford Village on Saturday, October 3 and Fright Night at Kennywood Park on Saturday, October 17. Forms must be turned in by September 27 for the Murder Mystery and by October 4th for Fright Night!!! 2. SHYCON - The Altoona-Johnstown Diocese will be holding its annual SHYCON event on October 25th at Saint Francis University. This is a great way to meet and share your faith with other high school youth from the area!! The guest speaker this year is Scott Anthony, a dynamic speaker that will help you better understand your faith & what it means to be a young Christian. Any high school youth interested in attending needs to complete a registration form (available on the Apex website or in the Narthex) and return it by Oct. 1. to the rectory. The cost is $25. If you have any questions please call Nancy at 241-7809. WHAT IS SCRIP? Scrip is a term that means "substitute money." So what exactly is that Holy Name Scrip table that we see every weekend in the Narthex all about? Holy Name School is selling Scrip. Simply put, scrip cards are gift certificates and gift cards which can be redeemed at stores and restaurants just like cash. Scrip cards are the same as the gift cards that you buy in stores. Holy Name School participates in the Great Lakes Scrip Program. Through this program, retailers allow the school to purchase store gift certificates at a discount, anywhere from 2% to 25%. When you purchase scrip at face value, Holy Name School earns revenue from the difference. Our school has the potential to raise thousands of dollars with this scrip program. The best part is this is money we are spending anyway. The scrip is issued by national and local retailers where many of our families already shop. These merchants want to support non-profit organizations, and in return ask you to support them by shopping with scrip at their stores. You can use scrip to purchase everyday items like food, clothing, groceries, toys, gifts, even gasoline and many other essentials. Stop by the Scrip table in the Narthex to pick up a scrip order form for an extended list of companies that participate. Scrip cards are available for sale daily at the HN school office and at the rectory office during regular office hours (cash or checks only, please). Scrip is also sold on Sundays from 8:30 am to 11:30 am in the Narthex. If you have any questions about this program please contact Holy Name School at 472-8817. Thank you for supporting our school! |
