ALL SAINTS' DAY - NOV. 1ST
On the feast of All Saints' we celebrate the lives of all the holy people who
ever lived on earth and are now happy with God in heaven. We celebrate not only
those proclaimed to be saints by Holy Mother Church but also those whose
sanctity was not even suspected. All the saints had to struggle with sin and
weakness as we do. With God's grace they won the battle and so can we.
The prayers and readings for this feast emphasize the four last things, which
are, HEAVEN, HELL, DEATH and JUDGEMENT. May we all pass from the Eucharistic
table, at which we are pilgrims, to the heavenly banquet.
ALL SOULS’ DAY
November 2nd, All Souls’ Day, and in fact the entire month of November, have
been designated by Catholics as a time of prayer for those who have died. The
tradition of special remembrance of the dead is rooted in our belief that the
dead will rise again and that all of us will be reunited in the Lord “so in
Christ all will come to life again” (Cor. 15,22).
The priests of Holy Name will remember at all Masses during the month of
November family members, relatives and friends who have departed from this life.
The names of these individuals should be listed on the envelope provided to you
in the current packet of church envelopes and returned immediately to the
rectory.
NOV 2nd MASS OF REMEMBRANCE
Mass of Remembrance Monday, November 2nd at 7PM.
YEAR FOR PRIESTS - PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS
O Lord of the harvest, your Word finds a home in our hearts, calls us to
community, and invites us to generous service of the human family. Bless with
courage and spirit your priestly people, called to full participation in the one
Body of Christ. May many choose to respond in public service to your call
offered in Jesus’ name. Amen.
CATHOLIC MORALITY AND HEALTH CARE
There are reasons enough for Pro-Life Catholics to oppose health care reform
legislation currently making its way through Congress. The following should be
ABSOLUTES before any health care legistration receives the support of the
Catholic Church, namely:
1. No taxpayer money used to pay for abortion;
2. No federal mandate requiring health plans to cover abortion;
3. Conscience protection clauses REMAIN for health care providers who refuse to
participate in abortions;
4. State laws governing abortion will be unaffected;
5. No government bureaucrat will be involved in end of life decisions.
HAITI DVD
The Haiti DVD has been completed and we are in the process of reproducing
copies. In the meantime, parishioners can access a shorter version of this DVD
(uploaded to YouTube) by going to our website, www.holynameebg.org and clicking
the link or directing at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xca0ZBVLnco.
JUNIOR CONFIRMATION RETREAT
The retreat for Junior students of Holy Name Parish who are preparing for the
sacrament of Confirmation is Saturday November 21st, 2009, from 9:00 a.m. to
5:30 p.m. at the Saint Francis University Campus Ministry Center in Loretto PA.
Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. We ask that you have the Junior
Confirmation Candidate dropped off no later than 8:45 a.m. You should have
received a letter with all the details concerning this retreat. Any questions,
call Tom Deskevich at 472-5903.
MASS ATTENDANCE COUNT
A review of the most recent count of parishioners attending weekly Mass shows
this year’s average count was 1309. The average attendance for the 3732
registered parishioners currently is 35.07%.
For a Catholic, life needs to be centered about the Eucharist. Sunday Mass needs
to be the highlight of one’s week, a call for all Catholics to be participators
at the Eucharistic Celebration, namely, the ongoing presence among us of Christ
Jesus’ gift of Self in His Death and Resurrection. To a Catholic, the Mass must
be at the very core and heart of being an authentic disciple of the Lord. Oh the
responsibility of being a Catholic disciple of Christ. Jesus said that it would
be better to have a millstone tied about one’s neck and to be cast into the
middle of the sea rather than to give scandal to a little one. Is your lifestyle
as a Catholic giving scandal to anyone, child or adult?
PRIVILEGE TO VOTE
Each Spring and each Fall your parish bulletin encourages you to be a
participant in the privilege of influencing governmental affairs by your
selection of candidates for offices whether on the National, State or Local
levels. Should you take this responsibility seriously? Absolutely!! Vote on
Tuesday, November 3rd.
LIFELINES
“It is above all in raising children that the family fulfills its mission to
proclaim the Gospel of life...the family celebrates the Gospel of life through
daily prayer, both individual prayer and family prayer. The family prays in
order to glorify and give thanks to God for the gift of life, and implores his
light and strength in order to face times of difficulty and suffering without
losing hope. But the celebration which gives meaning to every other form of
prayer and worship is found in the family’s actual daily life together, if it is
a life of love and self-giving.” -Pope John Paul II: The Gospel of Life, n92-93
STEWARDSHIP OF TIME - TIME IS A GIFT FROM GOD
Time is an important part of total stewardship. It is a gift from God, and the
steward realizes that he or she will be held accountable for the way in which
time is used on this earth. Once one recognizes the important of the role of
time, one begins to explore the many ways one can use time for God’s work. While
most people are complaining about losing time, the Christian steward is
constantly finding time for God and His work.
And how about you? Do you find time for the work of God? Be a good steward and
make the exciting discovery of time for yourself. No matter how busy you think
you are, you can find time if you try.
HOMEBOUND PARISHIONERS
With the change of the weather, it is anticipated that additional parishioners
may require home visits from parish priests and Eucharistic ministers during the
winter months. Please contact the rectory office (472-7244) if a family member
desires this worthy service.
