BULLETIN NEWS

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL - GOAL $89,918.00
Thank you to all who have participated in the Annual Catholic Appeal. To date, parishioners have generously donated $21,831.40, or 24%, toward our parish goal of $89,918.00. Please prayerfully consider supporting both our Diocesan ministries and our parish. If you do not have a pledge card, you may mail your gift (made payable to Annual Catholic Appeal) directly to the parish office. We wish each family to be sensitized to the fact that the diocese assessed $63.10 to each household. That accounts for Holy Name’s total assessment of $89,918.00. Those parishioners who could donate $100.00 or more would be greatly appreciated.. Thank you for your generous support and return your pledge card at your earliest convenience. Extra ACA envelopes can be found in the pews of the church.

POPE’S VISIT - RESPONSE MOST POSITIVE
We now realize that our Holy Father had a list of objectives which he deemed critical to address for the future of the U.S. church. Yes, he addressed the priestly sex abuse scandal, expressing his personal shame at what happened throughout our country. We heard challenging words concerning our current culture on issues ranging from economic justice to abortion. Recognizing the divisions within our church he made a firm appeal to “set aside all anger” and unite in order to effectively evangelize society.
He spoke of a concern, referred by him as the “attack of a new secularism” that undermines traditional moral values and the voice of religion in public affairs. He said, “We see clear signs of a disturbing breakdown in the very foundations of society; signs of alienation, anger, increased violence, a weakening of the moral sense and a growing forgetfulness of God.”
The Pope warned that today this secular-moral balance risks tipping toward a godless, individualist form of freedom. “The earth itself groans under the weight of consumerist greed and irresponsible exploitation.” He said that he was convinced that God was preparing for a “new springtime” for the Church in the United States. He described himself upon his arrival as “a friend, a preacher of the Gospel and one with great respect for this vast pluralistic society.”

FESTIVAL NEWS
1. NEEDED: NAMES OF ALL FESTIVAL VOLUNTEERS
Yes, all of us are aware that the great event for this parish, its Annual Festival, is five weeks away. Certainly not too early for chairpersons of the various concessions to be finalizing their lists of workers. THESE NAMES MUST BE SUBMITTED TO THE RECTORY OFFICE NO LATER THAN FRIDAY, MAY 23RD so that the Sunday bulletin of June 1st will carry the completed committee slates of names and hours of assignment.
2. FESTIVAL RAFFLE CHANCES - ONLY 5 WEEKS TO FESTIVAL
To a very large extent the parish depends upon this annual raffle to produce a successful Festival. Each family is requested to personally sell or purchase at least one book (20 chances) on attractive monetary prizes. Parishioners wishing to be responsible for additional books of these chances may so claim them at the rectory. The mailing will also include three raffle tickets from the Basket & Raffle Committee. See article below for further information on Arts & Crafts Raffle Tickets.
3. FESTIVAL FLEA MARKET
Pack up those unwanted items and donate them to the Festival Flea Market. No stuffed animals, clothes or straw baskets. Mark boxes and drop them off in the Church Library Room. Thanks!
4. FESTIVAL PRIZES NEEDED
Sr. Margie needs new items for the PICK-A- PRIZE Booth for men/women/kids of every age. Drop prizes off in the Church Library Room. Thank you!
5. TURKEYS
Always appreciated are the donations of turkeys. Please consider the donation of a turkey for the Festival dinner. We suggest that you bring donations to the Church Cafeteria Mon-Fri from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
6. RAFFLE
Any senior citizen willing to sit and sell raffle chances for a few hours at the Ebensburg malls, grocery stores, Bingo or booth at the Festival should contact Jim Arnone at 472-9566; extra books of chances are available to any parishioner at the rectory. Let the secretary know if you need an extra book or two. Please return your sold books of chances to the rectory at your earliest convenience.
7. CALLING COMMITTEE
Each year parishioners receive a call asking for the consideration of an item needed for the serving of 3000 dinners or the outside food concession stands. Please be cooperative and supportive.
8. HIGH SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS
Any high school student who would like to obtain service hours by working at the Festival Dinners is asked to call Karen Hurtack (472-6218) or Mary Lynn Stephens (472-7054).

OUR LADY'S MONTH
The month of May has always and ever awakened in the hearts of Catholic women and men something beautiful and sublime. Even nature bursts forth in bloom having relaxed its cold grasp upon the forces within its bosom to give new life and beauty to the world about us.
There seems to be a rejuvenation or spirit with us and as though we were little children again, in our spiritual lives, we turn to our Mother. We pray fervently that this blessed month will lift our hearts and thoughts to her who is our great Mediatrix before the throne of God.
Catholics give Mary a place as God himself has given to her beyond and above all created individuals because she was chosen by God to be without sin. She was the instrument by which Christ became human.
That is why we honor our Blessed Lady! This is why we are so devotionally proud of her! She was one of us and in her we are all exalted and lifted up because she who was of the human family was without sin. So then we ask you to join with us in the glorious Marian hymns during the month of May, filling our souls with love for her who is "our fallen nature's solitary boast." In honoring her we come closer to Jesus, Her Divine Son, our God and Risen Savior.

CONFIRMATION INFORMATION
For the past three years our junior high school candidates have been preparing for the sacrament of Confirmation. Our parish faith community has supported and prayed with them for the coming of the spirit in a fuller way into their lives and thus into the life of the parish and diocese. Now is the time for us to celebrate together this great event for our Church.
You are invited to the Confirmation Liturgy at 2:00 PM on Sunday, May 4. As in the past years we are the host parish for the following churches: St. John Vianney, Mundy’s Corner; St. Mary, Nanty Glo; Sts. Timothy and Mark, Twin Rocks and Holy Family, Colver. This sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated and conferred upon the candidates by our Bishop Joseph V. Adamec.

FIVE ADULTS CONFIRMED WITH PARISH YOUTH
Congratulations to our five adult parishioners confirmed by Bishop Joseph Adamec this Sunday. They are Diana Illig, Raymond St. Clair, Jason Mullen, Rebecca Mullen and James Nihart. A sixth parishioner, Anna Patton, was confirmed recently at Laurel Crest Manor where she resides. Prayerful congratulation to all, adults and youth alike, as you grow in the life of the Holy Spirit

FR. SICHKO’S MARKS OF EFFECTIVE CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP
First and foremost, as leaders in the home, the parish, the community at large, we must have an interior anchor to keep us positioned and faithful in a constantly changing world. Jesus’ anchor was his heavenly Father. Jesus spent time in prayer cultivating his relationship with his Father, constantly seeking to do the Father’s will. This kept him grounded and centered when the crowds or his own followers tried to persuade him according to their demands. This interior anchor should be ours as well. The Spirit of Jesus within us cries out “Abba! Father!” The Kingdom of God is within.

Since 1980, over 5,000 babies have been born in our area under the auspices of Birthright. Your support helps Birthright sustain the gift of life. Thank you.

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE - MONEY IS A TOOL
Money is an instrument we use to serve God. It is not good or evil. A poor person is not any more spiritual than a wealthy person. Our prudent managing of whatever resources we have been given is important. God has entrusted each of us with different gifts. We can’t serve God and mammon, but we can serve God with our mammon.

CEMETERY: SPRING CLEANING
