BULLETIN NEWS

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY
The second Sunday of Easter was first referred to as “Divine Mercy Sunday” by our Lord Jesus who in 1935 appeared in a series of visions to a polish nun named St. Maria Faustina Kowalska. In these visions, which are recorded in “The Diary of Divine Mercy” (St. Faustina’s own writing sold in stores now), Jesus urges people to take advantage of the special graces of full remission of all punishment due to sin by receiving Communion at Mass, going to confession, reciting the Divine Mercy Chaplet, and venerating the image of the Divine Mercy, all on Divine Mercy Sunday. On May 23, 2000 the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments at the Vatican decreed that “throughout the world, the second Sunday of Easter will receive the name ‘Divine Mercy Sunday’.”

CATHOLIC UPDATE: DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY
In the Jubilee Year 2000, Pope John Paul II formally instituted the Second Sunday of Easter to be called “Divine Mercy Sunday.” St. Faustina Kowalska was canonized the same day. Her message is one of attentiveness to the mercy of God, proclaimed so well liturgically in the Scripture Readings of this Sunday. Pope John Paul himself witnessed to divine mercy when he pardoned his would-be assassin, Ali Agca, after visiting him in his cell. The Holy Father said: “I spoke to him as a brother whom I have pardoned and who has my complete trust.” These words reflect the mercy of the Risen Jesus when he first appeared to his disciples who had abandoned him in the Garden. He greeted them with the words “Peace be with you.” The Divine Mercy icon of Jesus with outstretched arms to the world bears the words: Jesus, I trust in you. This Catholic Update teaches how to pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy and offers several family discussion questions for incorporating this devotion into the Catholic home.

PASCHAL CANDLE
From the Easter Proclamation at the Easter Vigil we prayed: “Rejoice, O earth in shining splendor, radiant in the brightness of your King! Christ has conquered! Glory fills you! Darkness vanishes forever!”
The light of the Easter Candle, so prominently displayed in our church sanctuary, is the representation of the Risen Christ, Light of the World. It will remain in the sanctuary until Pentecost Sunday. It will be lit for all liturgical prayer between now and that date. From then until the 2009 Easter Vigil it will be burning for Baptismal and Funeral liturgies.
Truly the Paschal Candle symbolizes the Light of Christ among us, a Light that scatters the darkness of sin and death!

TRIP TO HAITI - APRIL 10-14
As announced earlier the Haiti Corporate Board has endorsed the suggestion that a DVD be produced with the multitude of highlights presently evidenced as a result of Kindred Journey’s long-standing support of Brother Francklin’s efforts among indigent Haitian peasants in the Pandiassou region of the nation’s Central Plateau. To accomplish this objective, Jim King, a professional photographer, his son-in-law Matt Sinosky, Sr. Margie and myself will give this long weekend for the eventual production of this news-worthy DVD. Pray for the safety of this crew and a most successful effort in the production of this DVD.
