BULLETIN NEWS

THE CHURCH’S BEST-KEPT SECRET - PART I
In 1968 when Humanae Vitae was released, there were great howls of protests from lay and clergy alike. The notion was that the Church was "behind the times," "out of touch" with the needs of married couples, lacking in compassion and so forth, because of its condemnation of the practice of birth control among married couples. In truth, it was the secular culture that was out of touch in its notion that the Church had to take her marching orders from the culture instead of vice-versa. On this issue as on many others the Church has been sadly vindicated, although many still do not recognize it.
Many were and still are wrong in their disagreements with God on contraception. Is dissent on Humanae Vitae a disagreement with God? Yes. Jesus Christ is God, and he instituted the Magisterium, saying, "He who hears you hears me." He gave Peter the Keys, saying "what you loose on earth is loosed in Heaven, what you bind on earth is bound in Heaven." This is what Catholics believe; that the ordinary Magisterium speaks for Christ infallibly on matters of faith and morals. A papal encyclical is an exercise of the ordinary Magisterium which is infallible in its teaching, even though not declared solemnly.

SIGN UP FOR WEEKLY EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
A sign up sheet is available at all Church entrances. Over 40 people indicated on the recent parish survey that they would commit to time before the Blessed Sacrament if weekly Adoration were changed to Thursday evenings, 6:00-9:00 PM. We will begin the new time schedule only when certain that all time slots have a clear and definite number of committed parishioners. Please sign up this week. Thank you.

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE - THIS IS A MOTIVE FOR GIVING

The important thing is how much we need to give in order to respond to the things that God has given us. Our thought should be: I need to give - so I will give regardless of my budgets, endowments, or anything else. I cannot fulfill myself as a Christian unless I do give - and I’m willing to let nothing stand in the way of my fulfillment.

PARISHES ASSIGNED FOR HAITI MISSION APPEALS
Msgr. Gaus has received from the Propagation of Faith Office a list of five parishes where he will speak in behalf of the missionary needs in Pandiassou, Haiti, and working in conjunction with Brother Francklin Armand (Little Brothers of the Incarnation) and Little Sister Caroline (Little Sisters of Jesus). The five parishes and scheduled weekend speaking engagements are the following:

7/26-7/27 St. Thomas More, Roaring Spring                                 9/6-9/7 Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel, Loretto
8/23-8/24 St. Anthony of Padua, Windber                                     TBA      St. Mary’s, Nanty Glo
8/30-8/31 Holy Family, Hooversville

IN DEFENSE OF CATHOLIC SEXUAL ETHICS
In 2006, the U.S. spent an average of $48 per diabetes patient on research. We spent $144 for those suffering from Alzheimer’s and $154 for those suffering from Parkinson’s. For AIDS patients, we spent $3,084. And what are we told is the answer to AIDS? More research. The tragedy is that those with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s did nothing voluntarily to cause their malady. Technology, in the form of condoms, pills and the like, are also supposed to save us. But they never do, and no one has demonstrated this better than Edward C. Green, director of the AIDS Prevention Research Project at the Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies. In a piece he co-authored in First Things, Green concluded that “In every African country in which HIV infections have declined, this decline has been associated with a decrease in the proportion of men and women reporting more than one sex partner over the course of a year - which is exactly what fidelity programs promote.” He adds, “The other behavior that has often been associated with a decline in HIV prevalence is a decrease in pre-marital sex among young people.” As for the utility of condoms reducing HIV/AIDS, he properly calls it a “myth.”

8:00AM MASS WITH THE BISHOP - JULY 3RD - SEND OFF FOR AUSTRALIA
On Thursday, July 3, 2008, the 8:00AM Mass will be a Diocesan send-off for those going to Australia for World Youth Day. Bishop Joseph will be the main celebrant. Those of you who regularly attend 8:00AM daily Mass should be aware that this Mass will not be the usual 25-30 minute Mass that you are accustomed to. Please take this into account if you plan to attend the 8:00AM Mass on Thursday, July 3rd.

ANOINTING OF THE CHRONICALLY ILL AND AGED
The annual Anointing Service is scheduled for Wednesday, July 30, during a 7:00 PM Mass. We ask all parishioners burdened with chronic illness and those 65 years and older to reserve that date for the Lord to share His special grace with you through the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. It will be a most satisfying and rewarding evening for those who will be present.

FESTIVAL INVOICES NEEDED IMMEDIATELY
Any chairperson in possession of festival invoices is asked to drop them off at the rectory no later than Wednesday, June 25.

PETER’S PENCE COLLECTION
Next weekend, our parish will participate in the Peter’s Pence Collection for the Works of the Holy Father. The theme for this year’s Collection echoes that of the Holy Father’s apostolic journey to the United States in April 2008 - Christ Our Hope. The Peter’s Pence Collection enables the Holy Father to respond with emergency financial assistance to our brothers and sisters in need throughout the world - those who suffer as a result of war, oppression, disease, and natural disaster. It is an opportunity for Catholics to stand in solidarity with the universal Church and to offer hope to those in need. Thank you for your support of the works of the Holy Father through the Peter’s Pence Collection.

ROADTROTTERS NEWS
YES, the parishioners of Holy Name have spoken! The questionnaire completed during the last mission indicated a desire to resume "roadtrotting", with the planning of trips. To that end, the following three trips are being considered:

Sight and Sound Theater for "In the Beginning"
Trip to visit the Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C. (during Cherry Blossom Season)
Trip to a casino (exact location to be determined)

If you have an interest in any or all of these trips, please call Toni Merlo 749-7352. The goal of the Roadtrotters is to plan according to the wishes of the parishioners, which needs further definition. Indeed, we are open to suggestions, just please let them be known.

ADULT BIBLE STUDY
The monthly class on St. Paul’s letters is Thursday, June 26, 7PM in the Hall: I Corinthians.

OUTREACH/VISITATION COMMITTEE

The Outreach Committee will meet Monday, June 23, 7PM in the Church Library.

Monday, June 30, 7PM in the Church Library. Anyone in the stressful position of being care-giver is welcome to attend this 1-hour prayer-support group session. (Call Sr. Margie: 472-8315)

CATHOLIC CHARITIES
Overwhelmed by bills? Need help with utility terminations? Catholic Charities, an agency of the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown, offers emergency financial assistance and referral information to help pay utility costs, evictions, medications, rent and temporary housing, and transportation expenses. Please call them at 814-944-9388 for more information.

The Basket Committee of Holy Name Festival would like to thank all individuals and businesses for their generous donations which enabled the Basket Committee to exceed its goal of 150 baskets by 11. An old saying, author unknown, is certain applicable to our contributors: “The charitable person gives out the door and God puts it back through the window.” Again, a big THANK YOU!!!
