SOLEMNITY OF THE EPIPHANY Wise Men traveling a great distance to see a Baby! Babies are always signs of hope. The Baby to which these Wise Men traveled carried more hope and potential than any other child born into the human family. The birth of Jesus brought hope to humankind for peace, justice, mercy, prosperity, unity and love. With this Child, hope was not limited to one family or nation, but on this unique occasion, the Epiphany, it is revealed that the hope and potential was to be global. There is, perhaps, no quality society lacks more than hope. So many people throughout the world live in fear. So many parents no longer believe their children will enjoy a brighter future than they themselves currently experience. It is always religion, specifically faith in the sacred that produces hope. It is faith that provides and refreshes us in our search for a brighter future. Follow the Star!! It will lead you to the very Source of Hope!! Attach your hope to the Messiah, our Lord and Savior. Hope is kept alive in our acts of compassion, love and outreach which are performed by allowing ourselves to be guided by the Light, Christ Jesus Himself. The manifestation of Jesus is indeed our Hope!! May the Year 2008 be a year for an increase of the virtue of Hope in each of you. HOME BLESSING FOR FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY Lord Jesus, with Mary and Joseph you formed the Holy Family. Come to our home and make us a holy family. As the Magi offered their gifts in adoration, may we offer our lives as gifts in your humble service. Bless this doorway to our home. (Holy water may be sprinkled.) Bless our comings and our goings. May all who enter here be met with love and respect. (Now trace over the doorway with chalk 20 + C + M + B + 08 for the Year of Our Lord and initials of the traditional names of the 3 kings: Casper, Melchior and Baltasar.) Open wide the door of our home and our hearts to welcome You, Lord Jesus. Fill this place, and us, with your light and your peace. And after daily welcoming you among us all our lives on earth, may you in turn open wide for us the door to eternal life. We ask this in your holy name. Amen. GRATITUDE FOR THE PARISH FEAST DAY MASS Much gratitude is extended to all who helped make our annual celebration of the Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus so spiritually rewarding on January 3rd. We thank Mr. Rhoades and Mrs. Gina Tusing for the festive selection of hand bells and hymns performed so beautifully by the children and Adult Hand Bell Choir of Holy Name. We appreciate the effort of families and parishioners who made attendance at this evening Mass a priority. May Christ Jesus bless our parish abundantly as we strive daily to bring honor to His Holy Name. POPE BENEDICT SPEAKS OUT CONCERNING FAMILY LIFE (Summary from the Pittsburgh Catholic) In his annual message January 1 on “World Day of Peace,” Pope Benedict XVI said that anything that threatens the traditional family threatens peace, because the family “is the first and indispensable teacher of peace.” The responsibilities, joys and struggles learned within family life must be mirrored on a global level in the human family. “The first form of communion between persons is born of the love of a man and a woman who decide to enter into a stable union in order to build together a new family. But the peoples of the earth too are called to build relationships of solidarity among themselves, as benefits members of the one human family. In healthy family life we experience the fundamental elements of peace: justice and love between brothers and sisters; the role of authority expressed by parents; loving concern for the members who are weaker because of youth, sickness or old age; mutual help in the necessities of life; readiness to accept others and, if necessary, to forgive them.” Anything that weakens the family based on marriage of a man and a woman, that stands in the way of its openness to the responsible acceptance of new life, or that obstructs its right to be the primary educator of its children constitutes an obstacle on the road to peace. The Pope’s words are clearly echoed in our weekly Prayer For Stronger Family Life. Let us take the words of our Holy Father and the petitions of our parish prayer to heart. Let us pray for world peace, and work together to strengthen traditional family values, beginning in our own homes. ADDITIONAL POINSETTIA MEMORIAL Salvo & Santina Bono/Mario & Carol Bono Joe & Sophie Stupic/Mario & Carol Bono STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE - GENEROSITY IS RELATIVE Generosity, of course, is relative. Twenty dollars from one person is very generous, from another, a mere pittance. When it comes to church support, therefore, that’s why we are asked not for equal giving, but for equal sacrifice. Only the giving individual - and God - can judge when there is sacrifice. Stewardship takes all of us into account. The church doesn’t just need to receive money...you need to be generous.
