BULLETIN NEWS

HAITI NEWS
Three thousand residents from the devastated ruins of Port-au-Prince have been relocated to Pandiassou, now the responsibility of Brother Francklin for their future care. What an organizational challenge! It is believed that initially tents, food and other supplies will be part of the agreement to accept this number of homeless individuals. It is obvious that the situation in Port-au-Prince remains chaotic. The total absence of manageable planning to respond to the urgent needs of the populace is so evident.
We are responding to local concerns both for sponsoring children and/or the adoption of Haitian children to our local area. Additional diesel water pumps are part of current discussion. A wire-transfer of funds will be sent to Brother Francklin the early part of this week. Your generous response to the needs of our Haitian brothers and sisters is prayerfully acknowledged and appreciated. The sum of money transferred will be published in the February 7th bulletin.

PRAYER FOR HAITI
Mary, Mother of Perpetual Help, you are blessed and favored by God. We come to you as your loving children. Watch over the Haitian people who invoke you as their patroness. Take care of their needs in the aftermath of the earthquake. As you held the child Jesus in your loving arms, so now take them in your arms. In time of trial, may your children never fail to call out to you. Intercede for your beloved Haitian people, dear Mother. May they, and we, obtain pardon for our sins, love for Jesus, final perseverance, and the grace always to call upon you, our Mother of Perpetual Help. Amen.

CUT-A-THON TO BENEFIT HAITI
Holiday Hair in the Walmart Plaza, Ebensburg will sponsor a Cut-a-thon, $10 wet cuts, on February 7 from Noon-4:00PM. All proceeds will benefit the victims of the Haiti earthquake, given to Msgr. Gaus to be sent to Br. Francklin.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK
The theme for Catholic Schools throughout the United States this year is “Catholic Schools: Dividends for Life.” This is a perfect theme as we celebrate the centennial of our parish school - 1910 to 2010. What a commitment to our children over the course of the last 100 years, passing on the teachings and values of our Catholic faith in this most unique environment. This parish has made a major investment in the lives of our students and families, aiding them to become faith-filled disciples of Christ. We can’t begin to imagine the sacrifices of the religious women (Sisters of St. Joseph), and lay faculty members who have contributed to the dividends of spiritual vitality of our graduates over the course of this past century.
Yes the dividends go far beyond academic excellence. My pastoral years of experience with Catholic education can attest to the Christ-like love and compassion, namely the Gospel Values, witnessed in the lives of children who have had the privilege of attending our private Catholic school system. Holy Name School has indeed added to the spiritual vitality of this parish. It gives evidence of the Church Alive! By God’s grace and the future desires and investments of dedicated parents may Holy Name School remain in Ebensburg as a “Dividend for Life” for another 100 years!!!

FEAST OF PRESENTATION OF THE LORD - FEBRUARY 2ND
The feast of the Presentation of the Lord has been celebrated in the Church since the 5th century. Many of our parishioners can recall that until 1960 the feast had been called Candlemas Day and Purification of the Blessed Mother.
Christ has not finished the work he began on the day of his presentation to the world in the temple. He calls upon each of us to reflect his light. Yes, each of us has the privilege and the dignity to reflect the light of Christ in a very unique way. Each and every Christian incarnates Christ in a personal way, a way which no one else can do. We became members of His Body through baptism.
He needs us as His instruments now to complete His mission, to be reflections of Him in our homes, the neighborhood, the places of occupation and recreation. Ever remain sensitive to your own unique way of reflecting the burning love of Christ to a hurting world. Be genuine and effective evangelizers to your area of God=s kingdom here on earth.
Bags of Home Candles are available in the sanctuary of the church. The offering is $2.00.

FEAST OF ST. BLASE - BLESSING OF THROATS
Wednesday, Feb. 3rd, is the feast of St. Blase. Traditionally throats are blessed on this day. The blessing is intended for all physical ailments including throat diseases. Throats will be blessed at all Masses and at 4:00 & 7:00 PM.

PARISH COUNCIL ELECTION RESULTS
Congratulations to the following parishioners who will compose the new Pastoral Council:
(Age group 19-35) Jennifer Bopp, Christopher Oravec; (Age group 36-55) Beth McGregor, Joseph Ridgeley; (Age group 56 and up) Theresa Scanlan, Kerry McCulley. In addition to the six elected members are the Pastor’s three appointments: Brian Bracken, Doug Tusing and Patricia McMullen. These three are presently members of the Parish Council and were eligible for a second term. Commissioning and blessing of the new Pastoral Council will take place at the 5PM Mass Saturday March 6th. A joint meeting of the present and new members will take place at the March meeting, Monday March 8th at 7 PM in the rectory.

WHY BIBLICAL, HETEROSEXUAL MARRIAGE MUST BE PRESERVED
Unless one-man, one-woman marriage is preserved as the only definition of marriage, true, exclusive marriage will cease to exist. If marriage means whatever this court or that legislature decides, then it means nothing. Marriage will no longer be viewed and valued as the ideal, desired relationship between man and woman. The exclusiveness of marriage is the essence of marriage. If marriage ceases to exist as the exclusive union of one man and one woman, it will fade from the place of exalted beauty designed by God Himself.

LIFELINES
“Abortion is one of those fundamental issues. If the very right to life is taken away then no other right matters. You don’t have the ability to hold another right or to have another right taken away. So, while health care, the right to a good education, housing, and all of these issues are very, very important, they are meaningless if the right to life is not first protected.”
- Cathleen Cleaver Ruse, Esq., Director of Planning and Information for the Secretariat for Pro-Life Activities, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

STEWARDSHIP OF TALENT - AN ATTITUDE ABOUT LIFE
Think of life as something God has given us to manage or take care of. Everything comes from Him. We may use our talent or ability to achieve material goods; but the talent or ability is a gift from God to begin with. Once you look at life this way, as a stewardship, it becomes clear that we just give of what we are as well as what we have. It means cultivating an attitude of generous giving and getting into the habit of thinking of others.

PARISH LENTEN MEAGER MEAL
In keeping with the spirit of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, a Parish Family Meager Meal is scheduled for Sunday, March 7, at 5:PM in the Church Hall. This simple meal of prayer and fellowship, soup and bread is a reminder of our solidarity with the poor, especially the poor in Haiti. There is no charge, but a free will offering is invited for Haiti relief. Please call Sr. Margie so we know how many to expect. Families, friends and neighbors welcome!

DISCOVER TRUE FINANCIAL FREEDOM
Holy Name Church (in conjunction with the Family Life Office) will be sponsoring a 6 week course on the 7 Steps to Becoming Financially Free. It is a small group study that will offer you all the nuts and bolts to make the most of God’s generous gifts. Written by author, financier and lifelong Catholic Phil Lenahan, it weaves personal anecdotes with sound Catholic teaching and extensive financial counseling experience to help you gain clarity on some of the biggest issues you face today. Most importantly, he shows you why your financial plan is part of a much larger spiritual plan that God has in mind for you.
Pre-registration is required and due no later than February 10th. Cost includes book and workbook: $35 per individual or $50 per couple (couples will share a book). Walk Together in Faith

Attend Mass on Sunday With Your Child

CSW: Today marks the beginning of Catholic Schools Week, the national celebration of Catholic education and its role in preparing our young people for a life of love and service to their families, their communities and the Lord. Students look forward to this week each year because it includes enjoyable events and special treats. But it is also a time for us to celebrate the long-standing tradition of Catholic education to instill in students the faith, knowledge, morals and discipline that will enable them to fulfill their future roles in life. Now, more than ever, a Catholic education is truly an investment in the future that is worth the consideration of every family.
