BULLETIN NEWS

FEAST OF PRESENTATION OF THE LORD - FEBRUARY 2ND
The feast of the Presentation of the Lord has been celebrated in the Church since the 5th century. Many of our parishioners can recall that until 1960 the feast had been called Candlemas Day and Purification of the Blessed Mother.
Christ has not finished the work he began on the day of his presentation to the world in the temple. He calls upon each of us to reflect his light. Yes, each of us has the privilege and the dignity to reflect the light of Christ in a very unique way. Each and every Christian incarnates Christ in a personal way, a way which no one else can do. We became members of His Body through baptism.
He needs us as His instruments now to complete His mission, to be reflections of Him in our homes, the neighborhood, the places of occupation and recreation. Ever remain sensitive to your own unique way of reflecting the burning love of Christ to a hurting world. Be genuine and effective evangelizers to your area of God=s kingdom here on earth.
Boxes of Home Candles are available in the sacristy of the church. The offering is $2.00.

FEAST OF ST. BLASE - BLESSING OF THROATS
Sunday, February 3rd, is the feast of St. Blase. Traditionally throats are blessed on this day. The blessing is intended for all physical ailments including throat diseases. Throats will be blessed after the 5:00PM Vigil Mass and after all Sunday Masses.

YOUR COOPERATION AND UNDERSTANDING, PLEASE
We’ve mentioned in times past the difficulty in scheduling every request for a Mass intention on the day specified. Realize that, with a parish of 1500 families and the possibility of arranging annually 730 Masses with only two assigned priests to Holy Name, many intentions can only be satisfied through the support of the Franciscan Fathers of Loretto. Those priests offer a daily Mass at their own convenient time. Therefore we will never be able to confirm the time or place where your intention will be satisfied in Loretto. Also, please be considerate of the number of Masses requested at Holy Name. We will continue to serve the greatest number of our families who insist upon having their Mass request satisfied at Holy Name.

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE - DOING GOD’S WILL
Monetary gifts to God teach us patience and prudence. We learn how to control our inordinate wishing for many things that we buy. This discipline of our will makes it easier for us to live God’s law. Therefore giving definitely helps us to do God’s will.

FESTIVAL NOODLE MAKING DATES
Volunteers in great number are needed for noodle making for the following Wednesdays: February 20, March 12 & 26, April 9 & 23 at 8:30AM in the church hall. Early bird helpers welcome after 7:00 AM. No experience is needed. Come for all or part of the day. Free lunch. Noodles bagged at 8:30 AM on Fridays.

CATHOLIC UPDATE: FASTING FROM OUR CLUTTER
Ready or not, the season of Lent will soon be upon us! This issue of Catholic Update offers a brief day by day reflection to help us clear the clutter - material, spiritual, mental - in preparation for Easter. This discipline of personal “spring house cleaning” will free us, not only from those non-essential things that distract the outer regions of our life, but also the inner regions. Sorting out toys and usable clothing for the poor, parting with used books that could nourish the imagination of someone else, even clearing the clutter of worry to make room for a peaceful night’s sleep can be Lenten activities. This is a unique approach to prayer, fasting and alms giving that is possible for families and individuals. Give it a go. Read the daily challenge; then follow your heart.

LENTEN BOOKLET: MAKE ROOM FOR LIFE!
Fr. Joseph Sica has done it again! In fact, this may be his best Lenten booklet yet. Each page holds out a hopeful challenge which could change our lives forever! Daily reflections include topics such a “Born to Bounce Back” and “Label Jars, Not People.” For 40 days the author helps us deal with the cross is our lives, love of enemies, forgiveness, bearing one another’s burdens and other important faith issues. Booklets will be available at all Masses next weekend, one per family, please. Don’t miss your copy! It’s a keeper!

FEBRUARY - CATHOLIC PRESS MONTH - $10.00 CONTRIBUTION
A catholic newspaper can be the most effective form of diocesan-wide evangelization available. There we expect to find comments on Scripture, articles by bishops giving the official teaching of the Church, stories of papal trips bringing attention to social justice issues throughout the world, etc., etc., etc. Holy Name parishioners are requested to read the Catholic Register and prayerfully find articles there which expose them to clear, concise application of Christ's teaching and which might also dispel some of the confusion among Catholics rather than sustain it. Please use the envelope found in the February packet to make your $10.00 contribution in support of publishing Catholic teachings and news for this area of the church.

Walk Together in Faith

Attend Mass on Sunday With Your Child

Message from the Principal: Today marks the beginning of Catholic Schools Week, the national celebration of what makes Catholic education special. As we begin our annual observance I would like to acknowledge and express deepest gratitude to Msgr. Arnold Gaus, Father Matthew Reese, benefactors, parents, faculty and staff, students, volunteers and everyone in our community who contributes to the success of Holy Name School. Thank you for your support and may the blessing of our generous Lord be yours, this week and always. Please join us for this week’s special events. Visit the classrooms and join us for lunch during our Open House on Wednesday, stop by the Book Fair on Tuesday evening or Wednesday during school hours, plan to attend family literacy night on Tuesday at 6:00 PM, join us for the First Friday liturgy and encourage friends who may be considering Catholic education for their children to visit our school. Come see how Holy Name School lights the way.

First in Diocese: On January 8, Holy Name School received an e-mail from the Diocesan Office listing the top six diocesan schools who have achieved the greatest number of “stickers” in the First in Math online program. This math program is a dynamic resource that engages students in practicing their math skills. All students in Grades 4-8 have been enrolled and know how to participate in the program. Students receive on line “stickers” for their accomplishments. We are pleased that our students have earned 66,579 stickers, enabling us to be in first place. Individual accomplishments are also noted. The top five HN students as of January 23 are: Dan D’Agostini (1st); Matt Karlheim (2nd); Dan Lesney (3rd); Julia Baird (4th); and Michael D’Agostini (5th). Ranking 48th, Holy Name School is also the only diocesan school in the top 100 schools in the state.

Thank you: Last week the school received a check for $5,500 from the Education Evangelization Assessment in our Diocese. Each parish contributes to this assessment and we would like our parishioners to know that our school has benefited from the assessment and thank you for your support.

Scrip: A special thank you to everyone who supports our Scrip Program. The school children are so excited that the goal of $120,000 in sales by the end of December was met. Students enjoyed a “Treasure Map Island Day” on Friday.
Scrip will continue to be sold in the Narthex on Sundays. Scrip program now includes Walmart cards. Scrip cards may also be purchased in the school office during school hours. Anyone may purchase Scrip cards. If you know a family in Holy Name School and would like them to be credited with your order, have the family’s name written on your order form.
