BULLETIN NEWS
HOME BLESSING FOR FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY
Lord Jesus, with Mary and Joseph you formed the Holy Family. Come to our home and make us a holy family. As the Magi offered their gifts in adoration, may we offer our lives as gifts in your humble service. Bless this doorway to our home. (Holy water may be sprinkled.) Bless our comings and our goings. May all who enter here be met with love and respect. (Now trace over the doorway with chalk 20 + C + M + B + 10 for the Year of Our Lord and initials of the traditional names of the 3 kings: Casper, Melchior and Baltasar.) Open wide the door of our home and our hearts to welcome You, Lord Jesus. Fill this place, and us, with your light and your peace. And after daily welcoming you among us all our lives on earth, may you in turn open wide for us the door to eternal life. We ask this in your holy name. Amen.

SOLEMNITY OF THE EPIPHANY
Wise Men traveling a great distance to see a Baby! Babies are always signs of hope. The Baby to which these Wise Men traveled carried more hope and potential than any other child born into the human family. The birth of Jesus brought hope to humankind for peace, justice, mercy, prosperity, unity and love. With this Child, hope was not limited to one family or nation, but on this unique occasion, the Epiphany, it is revealed that the hope and potential was to be global.
There is, perhaps, no quality society lacks more than hope. So many people throughout the world live in fear. So many parents no longer believe their children will enjoy a brighter future than they themselves currently experience.
It is always religion, specifically faith in the sacred that produces hope. It is faith that provides and refreshes us in our search for a brighter future. Follow the Star!! It will lead you to the very Source of Hope!! Attach your hope to the Messiah, our Lord and Savior. Hope is kept alive in our acts of compassion, love and outreach which are performed by allowing ourselves to be guided by the Light, Christ Jesus Himself. The manifestation of Jesus is indeed our Hope!! May the Year 2010 be a year for an increase of the virtue of Hope in each of you

PASTOR’S PHYSICAL RECOVERY
Monsignor’s recovery progress is on schedule. He is overly anxious to return to full pastoral responsibilities in the near future. He is deeply appreciative for the scores and scores and scores of get well cards which carried sentiments of prayerful concern for his rapid healing. Continued prayers for his intentions are requested and prayerfully appreciated.

NEWS FROM HAITI
Brother Francklin is prayerfully grateful for the $253,748.72 shared with him in 2009 from the efforts of the Kindred Journey Family whose headquarters are located at the parish rectory. In an email received this past weekend, Brother asked that I share some factual encouraging news which has evolved based upon the charity from Kindred Journey. The 128th lake has just been completed. The 16 Nutrition Centers feed an average of 1000 meals per day. An additional 2000 students receive meals at school. He estimates that during this past year, approximately 50 tons of fish were harvested from these artificial lakes and hundreds of tons of vegetables were produced due to irrigation by the water pumps to the nearby acreage of the lakes. Kindred Journey is now also supporting the 650 street orphans who are receiving food, housing, education, clothing and much love. May the Lord continue to bless the efforts of Kindred Journey abundantly throughout 2010. Prayerful gratitude to all for your concern and support.

CHURCH LIGHTING
Your pastor will soon be meeting with the Property and Grounds Committee to discuss the upgrading for the proper illumination of the parish’s worship space. We are being told that our electrical bills may increase significantly in the months and years ahead. There are 155 fixtures attached to the ceiling of our church. Replacement of bulbs has become increasingly dangerous. Lighting technology has changed substantially in the past 40 years when the church was originally designed. There is a reasonable estimate that electrical rates could skyrocket as much as 30% by 2011. Control of our electrical costs will be the objective as this lighting system is being reevaluated. Don’t be shocked if half that number of fixtures may give worshipers greater illumination in the worship space. Cap and trade legislation from the US Senate, if ever passed, could prove to be a much heavier financial burden for Holy Name parishioners. Do we have a choice at this time but to attempt to control in the future the cost of electricity for our parish church?

U.S. BISHOPS AND THE SENATE HEALTH CARE REFORM BILL
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops assessed the recent Senate Bill as deficient with essential changes needed before moving forward. The legislative proposal now advancing “violates the longstanding federal policy against the use of federal funds for elective abortions and health plans that include such abortions, a policy upheld in all health programs covered by the Hyde Amendment as well as in the Children’s Health Insurance Program and the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program.” The bill “includes no conscience protection allowing Catholic and other institutions to provide and purchase health coverage consistent with the moral and religious convictions on other procedures.” Our Bishops have other concerns also with various issues of this bill.

HOME VISITATION FOR THE SICK
Parishioners need to keep your parish priests aware of homebound family members who desire to receive a regular visit from church ministers for the reception of Holy Communion. The rectory is kept reasonably informed of parishioners admitted to the Johnstown hospitals, but not from hospitals in Altoona or Pittsburgh. Priests and Eucharistic Ministers are most willing to make either monthly or weekly visits to the homebound. The size of the parish precludes the priests from knowing the illnesses of all 4,500 members. Phone the rectory to have your name placed on the monthly Communion List, if not already receiving the attention from the ministers mentioned above.

LITURGICAL REFLECTION - ROMAN MISSAL
Today is the Epiphany of the Lord. Jesus Christ has appeared as the Light to all the nations. Catholics throughout the world gather to give praise and thanks to God this day. How we pray and what we pray is found in the Roman Missal. In the United States of America we await the new Roman Missal to be promulgated in the future. Many of the prayers at Mass will receive a new translation. And, so, believers will need to open their minds and hearts to hear and learn some new words to familiar prayers.

LIFELINES
“All rights presuppose the right to life. If the right to life is not defended, the defense of all other rights is useless. It becomes a lie, because it would mean that the defense to the right to work, to society, etc. applies only to some, and not to all.” - Bishop Elio Sgreccia, Vice-President of the Pontifical Academy of Life, Vatican City.

PRO-LIFE NEWS
1. YELLOW RIBBON SALE
Prior to all Masses the weekend of January 9-10, Support Life Ribbons will be available. Your generous offering will be appreciated. It not only supports the sanctity of life but also is an encouragement to those actively involved for the Pro-Life cause. Sale of Yellow Ribbons helps to defray the cost of the buses to Washington, D.C.
2. BUS TO MARCH FOR LIFE IN WASHINGTON, D.C.
The local Republican Party located in Johnstown will be sponsoring a bus to the Annual March For Life in Washington, D.C. on January 22, 2010. Donation of $5 per person will be used for future Pro-Life activities. Bus will depart from Holy Name/St. John Vianney Parking Lots. For reservations, contact Ann Poole 472-8584 or Millie Bodenschatz 472-6193. All reservations first come-first serve basis. We will be sharing this bus with parishioners from St. Mary’s Parish in Nanty Glo and St. John Vianney Parish in Mundy’s Corner.

THINK ABOUT IT
Isn’t it funny how $10.00 looks so big when we take it to church....and so small when we take it to the store? Isn’t it funny how big 60 minutes are when serving God, but how small when we are fishing, or playing golf or basketball? Isn’t it funny how laborious it is to read a chapter of the Bible, but how easy to read 200 or 300 pages of a novel? Isn’t it funny how we believe what a person or newspaper says, but question what the Bible says? Isn’t it funny how we need 2 or 3 weeks to fit a church event into our schedule, but have no problem adjusting for a social event at the last minute? Isn’t it funny how we get thrilled when a football game goes into extra-overtime, but we complain when a sermon is longer than we expected? Isn’t it funny how people scramble to get a front seat at any game, but scramble to get a back seat at Church? Isn’t it funny how everyone wants to go to heaven, provided they don’t have to believe...think...say...or do anything?

STEWARDSHIP OF TALENT - TALENT COMES FROM GOD
Vaughn Shoemaker won several Pulitzer Prizes as a cartoonist for the Chicago Daily News. He often confessed publicly, “I get down on my knees beside my drawing board every morning of my life. I wouldn’t dream of beginning work without saying, ‘God, whatever talent I have, You have given me and developed in me. Take it and use it. Guide my hand.’”

PARISH WEBSITE – HOLIDAY EVENTS
When you have a free moment, please take the time to visit our parish website at www.holynameebg.org. Not only is the site full of useful information, including links to the weekly bulletin, but there are also some great photos of recent events such as the Advent Wreath Making session, the Christmas Craft Fair, and the Parish Nativity Display. We suggest that you check the site periodically, as more photos of other Christmas activities will be posted soon.

PARISH REGISTRATION
In order to be considered a member of Holy Name, we must have on file a Parish Registration form for you which can be found in the Narthex of the church. Please take a moment to file out this form if you are a new member currently attending Holy Name Parish who has not yet registered or any young adult previously listed as a member under their parents household who now live on their own and are still attending Holy Name.
