FESTIVAL DATES
The dates for this year’s Festival are JUNE 6-7-8.
FESTIVAL NOODLE MAKING DATES
Volunteers in great number are needed for noodle making on Wednesday, March 12 at 8:30 AM in the Church Hall. Early bird helpers welcome after 7:00 AM. No
experience is needed. Come for all or part of the day. Free lunch. Noodles
bagged at 8:30 AM on Fridays. Additional noodle making dates: March 26,
April 9 & 23.
EASTER DATE PHENOMENON
As you may know, Easter is always the 1st Sunday after the 1st full moon after
the Spring Equinox (which is March 20). This dating of Easter is based on the
lunar calendar that Hebrew people used to identify Passover, which is why it
moves around on our Roman calendar. Found out a couple of things you might be
interested in! Based on the above, Easter can actually be one day earlier (March
22) but that is pretty rare. This year is the earliest Easter any of us will
ever see the rest of our lives! And only the most elderly of our population have
ever seen it this early (95 years old or above!). And none of us have ever, or
will ever, see it a day earlier!
Here's the facts: The next time Easter will be this early (March 23) will be the
year 2228 (220 years from now). The last time it was this early was 1913 (so if
you're 95 or older, you are the only ones that were around for that!). The next
time it will be a day earlier, March 22, will be in the year 2285 (277 years
from now). The last time it was on March 22 was 1818. So, no one alive today has
or will ever see it any earlier than this year!
CATHOLIC UPDATE: AGONY IN THE GARDEN
The Agony in the Garden is one of the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary and part
of the Passion story in all Four Gospels. How do Catholics understand the
Passion of Jesus? This Catholic Update invites us to enter into the Garden of
Gethsemane with Jesus, to be with him, to learn of him. The Greek word “agonia”
was a term used for athletes as they warmed up for an Olympic event. Jesus was
praying in the garden to prepare himself for an eternal contest with sin and
death. He had a passion, a deep love for the world, for every person who has and
ever will exist, and he entered his garden to reverse the disobedience of Adam
and Eve in that first Garden of Eden. This Son of God would do the will of his
Father to the end. The article poses some very critical questions for our Holy
Week consideration: Can I give of my life without resentment and bitterness? Can
I face humiliation and be preserved in peace before the God who loves me? Can I
sacrifice myself for the sake of the greater good? Remember, even in the midst
of his agony in the garden, God sent angels to Jesus to comfort and strengthen
him.
DAILY MASS
Much discussion for Lent centers about the topic of DISCIPLINE. Positive forms
of discipline should be built into all of our Lenten practices. One of the
noblest forms of spiritual discipline is attendance at Mass during Lenten
weekdays. For your convenience you will notice that from Monday through
Thursday, Masses will be scheduled at 6:30 AM, 8:00 AM & 7:00 PM. We do not
reject other spiritual disciplines but we can not suggest anything superior to
the Eucharistic Liturgy and the graces flowing from it.
IMPORTANCE OF SACRAMENT OF PENANCE
The attitude among many Catholics toward the Sacrament of Reconciliation has
changed significantly, and, to be true, not for the best for the church's
membership. Ever so many individuals today have a personal psychologist or
counselor for the purpose of maintaining focus in their topsy-turvy world. Might
we be overlooking the availability of a spiritual resource commonly known as
one's Confessor? Peace of soul is a natural by-product of a good confession. The
Sacrament of Penance restores friendship with one's Lord and Savior. If it is
inner healing that is needed, then Confession is your answer. The Sacrament of
Penance contributes to the spiritual development of the Christian life. Jesus
provided the avenue to unload guilt. More of our Catholics need to use this
instrument of grace in order to experience inner relief and consolation.
Again this Lenten season Confessions will be heard after ALL daily Masses
beginning Monday, March 10 until Wednesday of Holy Week inclusive. The journey
to Easter must include reconciliation with our Savior. The Adult Lenten Penance
Service is scheduled for Tuesday, March 18 at 7:00 PM.
STATIONS OF THE CROSS
Each Lenten Friday at 7:00 PM parishioners are invited to walk with our
suffering Lord to Calvary. What a powerful lesson of Divine love for the
individual sinner. The 14 reflections are all scripturally based. Prayed well,
the Stations afford a moving meditation of human worth in the eyes of God.
Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament will follow the Stations each Lenten
Friday, except the First Friday of March and Good Friday.
FASTING AND ALMS-GIVING: COINS FOR HAITI
Fasting had its practical roots among rural farming communities. When winter
storage bins ran dry before the spring crop was available, families banded
together with their neighbors, combining whatever food was left and rationing
supplies proportionately so no one would be left hungry. This is the spirit in
which we enter our Lenten Fast this year. Coins saved by our meager meals can
feed thousands of starving children in Haiti. If the whole Church practiced alms
giving with great generosity during Lent, think what a difference this could
mean for poorer nations like Haiti in the world economy today.
STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE - A MATTER OF FAITH
Make giving a matter of faith. Your income may be seasonal or affected by other
circumstances. But if you give proportionately, you can give something to God.
The amount may vary but the percentage will remain the same. Giving, after all,
is a matter of faith. We believe that God’s work is important and we give so
that it may continue. But giving is also important for our sakes, for it is a
natural and grateful response to God.
40th ANNIVERSARY OF THE NEW CHURCH
This weekend we proudly celebrate the 40th anniversary of the new Holy Name
Church, dedicated Feb. 25, 1968. A special thank you goes to all who helped
prepare the social in the Narthex after the 5PM Mass. An archives book, created
for us by Colleen Spicher, will remain in the Narthex so parishioners can review
the history of the construction of our beautiful parish Church. The anniversary
banner has also been refurbished and hangs in the Narthex. We have much to be
grateful for. Please continue to pray for the spiritual and temporal needs of
Holy Name Parish.
EASTER MEMORIAL
We will continue the tradition here at Holy Name of memorializing the deceased
with potted Easter flowers within our church sanctuary during the Easter Season.
If you wish to remember loved ones in this manner, please print their names and
yours on the form below. Place the form in an envelope with a $10.00 donation
and return it either by way of the collection basket or directly to the rectory
