HAITI NEWS AND UPDATE
Contact was made this part week with Little Sister Emmanuel in Pandiassou. She
was reached by cell phone as she was working with the peasants in one of the
many gardens made possible by the irrigation pumps Kindred Journey has helped to
provide. She indicated that everyone there is ok but exhausted by the daily
efforts to merely survive. So important is this ministry to earthquake victims
that every member of the Little Brothers/Sisters of the Incarnation have been
recalled to Pandiassou to assist in these efforts. Brother Francklin is
organizing the ever growing number of refugees into “tent neighborhoods.” The
Little Sisters are organizing the women to prepare and serve a daily meal at the
feeding centers, as well as gathering the children to teach some basic skills.
More and more of the new arrivals are being involved in the planting of new
gardens and the re-planting of existing gardens to expand the food source over
the long haul. Many refugees arrived with injuries; the more seriously hurt are
being housed at the Clinic and Birthing Center where Little Sister Nellie helps
to oversee their care. Native Haitian Dr. Clervil, whose family is among the
homeless from Port-au-Prince, is also tending the wounded. There have been more
major aftershocks creating an atmosphere of uncertainty and fear. Thus, even the
Little Sisters/Little Brothers continue to sleep outdoors in tents. In
Port-au-Prince, hundreds of homeless are housed in tents in the courtyard of the
“Village” school, surrounded by the ruins of former classroom buildings. The
concern now is for the spread of disease such as malaria, typhoid and TB, as
close quarters and the onset of the rainy season present new challenges. Please
continue to pray for our dear friends in Haiti. Consider making a commitment to
attend daily Mass during Lent for their special needs and intentions. Above all,
do not forget the great suffering that is theirs and which will be part of their
lives for many years to come.
SPIRITUAL JOURNEY TO EASTER
ASHES
Ashes will be blessed and distributed at the following Masses on Wednesday:
6:30, 8:00, 9:00 AM, 7:00 PM & also at 4:00PM (no Mass at 4:00 PM).
THE LITURGICAL SEASON OF LENT
Lent is a unique time of penance and reconciliation. It begins with the
imposition of Ashes. The Ash Wednesday celebration is one of the most popular
traditions in our liturgical year. It touches something deep within us, namely,
the recognition of our personal sinfulness.
Throughout all of Lent we are reminded to do penance. And why? Because some of
our actions are wrong. When we admit to our sinful ways we normally feel the
need for repentance. Without repentance there is no forgiveness of sin. The
world will attempt to convince us that sin does not exist. We know better!! Lent
recognizes that there is sin in the world and that we must try to overcome it.
Lent is that special season for us to turn to our loving God and seek His
forgiveness.
This is why so many people come to church on Ash Wednesday to receive the mark
of ashes. Deep down they admit to sinfulness and the need for the Lord's mercy.
Be honest with yourself. Recognize that some of the things we do are morally
wrong. Ashes we receive remind us of that. Use the Lenten Season for a healthy
reception of the Sacrament of Penance. Repent and reform!
LENTEN FAST AND ABSTINENCE
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fast and abstinence. All
Fridays of Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. The Church encourages
volunteer fasting on other days of Lent.
Fasting refers to only one full meal, with two small meals and no eating
otherwise during the day. Those who have reached their 18th birthday and not yet
their 59th birthday are obliged to fast. Abstinence refers to not eating meat at
all during the day. All those who have reached their 14th birthday are obliged
to abstain.
DAILY MASS
Much discussion for Lent centers about the topic of DISCIPLINE. Positive forms
of discipline should be built into all of our Lenten practices. One of the
noblest forms of spiritual discipline is attendance at Mass during Lenten
weekdays. For your convenience you will notice that from Monday through
Thursday, Masses will be scheduled at 6:30 AM, 8:00 AM & 7:00 PM. We do not
reject other spiritual disciplines but we can not suggest anything superior to
the Eucharistic Liturgy and the graces flowing from it.
IMPORTANCE OF SACRAMENT OF PENANCE
The attitude among many Catholics toward the Sacrament of Reconciliation has
changed significantly, and, to be true, not for the best for the church's
membership. Ever so many individuals today have a personal psychologist or
counselor for the purpose of maintaining focus in their topsy-turvy world. Might
we be overlooking the availability of a spiritual resource commonly known as
one's Confessor? Peace of soul is a natural by-product of a good confession. The
Sacrament of Penance restores friendship with one's Lord and Savior. If it is
inner healing that is needed, then Confession is your answer. The Sacrament of
Penance contributes to the spiritual development of the Christian life. Jesus
provided the avenue to unload guilt. More of our Catholics need to use this
instrument of grace in order to experience inner relief and consolation.
Again this Lenten season Confessions will be heard after ALL daily Masses
beginning Monday, March 22 until Wednesday of Holy Week inclusive. The journey
to Easter must include reconciliation with our Savior. The Adult Lenten Penance
Service is scheduled for Tuesday, March 30th at 7:00 PM.
STATIONS OF THE CROSS
Each Lenten Friday at 7:00 PM parishioners are invited to walk with our
suffering Lord to Calvary. What a powerful lesson of Divine love for the
individual sinner. The 14 reflections are all scripturally based. Prayed well,
the Stations afford a moving meditation of human worth in the eyes of God.
Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament will follow the Stations each Lenten
Friday, except for Good Friday. Stations will not be held on Friday, March 5th
due to the First Friday Mass at 7:00 PM and Nocturnal Adoration following.
FASTING AND ALMS-GIVING: COINS FOR HAITI
Fasting had its practical roots among rural farming communities. When winter
storage bins ran dry before the spring crop was available, families banded
together with their neighbors, combining whatever food was left and rationing
supplies proportionately so no one would be left hungry. This is the spirit in
which we enter our Lenten Fast this year. Coins saved by our meager meals can
feed thousands of starving children in Haiti. If the whole Church practiced alms
giving with great generosity during Lent, think what a difference this could
mean for poorer nations like Haiti in the world economy today.
SEASON OF LENT
For the convenience of parishioners who wish to attend daily Mass during the
Lenten Season (which is prayerfully encouraged) a 7:00 PM Mass will also be
added to the daily schedule. The response to this third daily Mass will be the
justification needed to those who question this additional Lenten Eucharistic
Celebration. Mentally plan now to share this Mass attendance commitment to your
Lenten resolves, including our parish’s concern for our Haitian brothers and
sisters.
LENTEN MEAGER MEAL-Register Now
In keeping with the spirit of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, our Parish Meager
Meal is Sunday, March 7, 5:PM in the Church Hall. This simple meal of soup and
bread is a reminder of our solidarity with the poor, especially in Haiti. No
charge; a free will offering is invited for Haiti “Kindred Journey.” Call
Sr.Margie or sign up at the Church entrances.
PARISH LENTEN BOOKLET Now Available
Fr. Sica has done it again, creating an excellent Lenten Booklet available to
all in the parish (one per family, please). Living With Passion presents a
touching human interest story for each day, simple yet direct and to the point:
The Lenten Journey is all about love. Fr. Sica offers upbeat and inspiring
advice for getting “passion” back in our lives, passion for life, for people,
for the kingdom of God. Suggested actions are really do-able. Take a copy home.
Read it. And do it!
BLACK AND INDIAN MISSIONS COLLECTION
Next Sunday, our parish will take up the annual Collection for Black & Indian
Missions. Your financial contribution helps to support Catholic communities on
reservations, in rural areas and inner cities. Your donation funds
evangelization programs to strengthen the faith, continue the legacy and share
the mission with children and adults here in the United States. For more
information, go to www.blackandindianmission.org. Please be as generous as your
means permit.
LIFELINES
The National Vietnam Memorial in Washington DC is a shiny black wall that
stretches 492 feet and lists the names of the 58,022 known Americans killed in
that ware. If such a wall listed the names of the children killed by abortion
since 1973, the wall would be about 60 miles long! The casualties of our wars
put together are fewer than the casualties from abortion in a single year.
FESTIVAL NOODLE MAKING DATES
Volunteers in great number are needed for noodle making for Wednesday, March
3rd. Early bird helpers welcome after 7:00 AM. No experience is needed. Come for
all or part of the day. Free lunch. Noodles bagged at 8:30 AM on Fridays.
Additional noodle dates: March 24, April 7 & April 21.
STEWARDSHIP OF TALENT
We are perhaps one of the best resources we have in order to reach our destiny.
Do I respect my own abilities and gifts; do I develop them and use them for the
Kingdom of God? Do I use the gifts God has given me so that others may be
happier? Do I see myself as unique, as important and gifted? In what way have I
used my talents for myself, for my family, for my church and for my community?
Jesus chastised the person who hid his talents under a bushel basket, or buried
them in the ground. Have we done better with our talents than that servant?
