SEASON OF LENT
For the convenience of parishioners who wish to attend daily Mass during the
Lenten Season (which is prayerfully encouraged) a 7:00 PM Mass will also be
added to the daily schedule. The response to this third daily Mass will be the
justification needed to those who question this additional Lenten Eucharistic
Celebration. Mentally plan now to share this Mass attendance commitment to your
Lenten resolves.
PROPERTY & GROUNDS COMMITTEE MEETING will be held Monday, February 8th at 6:00
PM in the rectory.
HAITI NEWS
You have noticed that TV coverage of the horrific carnage that continues to be a
daily occurrence in Haiti is gradually fading as noteworthy news. There ought to
be a universal mission applied to this devastated country. What experts are
properly assessing the ongoing deterioration of the vast area damaged by the
January 12th earthquake? Is there in place a coherent strategy in responding to
this natural disaster? Will there be adequate resources over the course of
future years to restore sanity to normal living conditions for the Haitian
people?
Officials are numbering the death toll at over 200,000 people. This nation,
impoverished to begin with, is earning the title of “one of the worst natural
disasters of the century.” Information has been received that only a limited
amount of food has been provided with the relocating of three thousand
Port-au-Prince residents to Pandiassou, our church’s Twin Parish. There will be
a strain for Brother Francklin to supply adequate quantities of food and water
to these relocated individuals.
As of February 1st, Holy Name parishioners have contributed $59,935.00 toward
this emergency appeal. Through sizeable donations to Kindred Journey Fund, Inc.,
a cumulative sum of $160,000.00 was wire-transferred to Brother Francklin’s bank
account in St. Petersburg, FL this past week. Your pastor is overwhelmed by the
financial response to the “cry of the poor” coming from our Haitian brothers and
sisters. Prayerful, prayerful gratitude to one and all.
Since Kindred Journey Fund, Inc. is a 501C3 non-profit charitable organization,
the law specifies for an annual re-organizational meeting. That meeting of its
members is scheduled for the rectory location at 2:00PM this afternoon. In a
future article, the members of this Board will be shared with you.
CUT-A-THON TO BENEFIT HAITI
Holiday Hair in the Walmart Plaza, Ebensburg will sponsor a Cut-a-thon, $10 wet
cuts, on February 7 from Noon-4:00PM. All proceeds will benefit the victims of
the Haiti earthquake, given to Msgr. Gaus to be sent to Br. Francklin.
LIFELINES
“The destruction of a human being at the very beginning of his or her life, is
the destruction of an innocent person. It is the interruption of a life which
has as much value as does each one of our lives. Without respect for life,
without respect for the family, society simply does not exist.”
-Bishop Elio Sgreccia, Vice-President of the Pontifical Academy of Life, Vatican
City

CATHOLIC EDUCATION AND THE ANGEL FUND
At the outset of this article, let it be said that many parents indeed sacrifice
to send their children to a Catholic school. They believe in its Catholic
values= format in the determination of curriculum.
The cost to educate a child at Holy Name this current scholastic year is
$3816.00. Of that total cost, the parish parents were asked to be responsible
for only $900.00. Everyone knows that tuition alone does not pay the full cost
of educating a child in Catholic schools. Parishes subsidize educational costs.
Without that financial support at the local level, tuition costs would be much
higher. How is it possible for the parish to subsidize these additional demands?
The answer is the ANGEL FUND. Annually we mention that no child shall be denied
a Catholic education because of finances. Over the course of many years
Endowment Funds to support Catholic education have been established. If you
would like more information on how to plan a charitable gift to the Endowment
Fund, contact the pastor.
Parents with children enrolled at Holy Name need to be prayerfully grateful that
the tuition will be reduced to $810 for the 2010-2011 school year. Generous
benefactors are the reason for reduction to tuition for the 2010-2011 school
year. We ask parishioners with the financial ability, even though not having
children enrolled at Holy Name to consider sponsoring a child with a gift of
$810.00 or any part thereof, large or small. The school is most appreciative of
contributions to the Angel Fund as a gesture of thanksgiving to the living as
well as a memorial to the deceased. Checks are to be made payable to Holy Name
Angel Fund.
STEWARDSHIP OF TALENT - OUR BEHAVIOR STEMS FROM RESPONSE
Because God has done this, I respond gladly and freely by doing that. Because
God has given himself for me, I respond by giving myself to him in every way
that I can. It is not that I owe him anything, or that he needs in particular
anything that I have. It is simply that I, in sheer gratitude for his many
gifts, want to return these gifts, in some small way, by giving of myself,
especially my talents.
JR./SR. HIGH CCD NEWS
There is no CCD on Sunday, February 14th. This is a scheduled weekend off.
Classes resume Feb. 21st at 10 a.m.
LENTEN MEAGER MEAL-Register Soon
In keeping with the spirit of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, a Parish Family
Meager Meal is scheduled for Sunday, March 7, at 5:PM in the Church Hall. This
simple meal of soup and bread is a reminder of our solidarity with the poor,
especially in Haiti. There is no charge, but a free will offering is invited for
“Kindred Journey” Haiti Relief. Call Sr. Margie so we know how many to expect.
Families, friends and neighbors all welcome!
PARISH LENTEN BOOKLET
Fr. Sica has done it again, creating an excellent Lenten Booklet available to
all in the parish (one per family, please). Living With Passion presents a
touching human interest story for each day, simple yet direct and to the point:
The Lenten Journey is all about love. Christ’s love for us; our love for God and
others. Fr. Sica offers upbeat and inspiring advice for getting “passion” back
into our lives, passion for life, for people and for the kingdom of God.
Suggested actions are really do-able. Take a copy home today. Read it. And do
it!

of seminarians and novices and has worked with the poor at the Catholic Spanish
Center in Washington, D.C. He has served in parishes and taught at Slippery Rock
and Duquesne Universities. Presently, he travels throughout the U.S. giving
parish missions and retreats. His radio program, Joyful Reflections, airs 6 days
a week in Western PA, and he has published books as well as spiritual talks on
CD and DVD. In 2008, Fr. Scott received the Archbishop Donald Wuerl Flame of
