ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL - GOAL $89,918.00
Thank you to all who have participated in the Annual Catholic Appeal. To date,
parishioners have generously donated $11,827.00, or 13%, toward our parish goal
of $89,918.00. Please prayerfully consider supporting both our Diocesan
ministries and our parish. If you do not have a pledge card, you may mail your
gift (made payable to Annual Catholic Appeal) directly to the parish office. We
wish each family to be sensitized to the fact that the diocese assessed $63.10
to each household. That accounts for Holy Name’s total assessment of $89,918.00.
If a family household is unable to meet the diocesan expectation, please
contribute a portion of the $63.10 so that the parish Goal may be realized.
Thank you for your generous support and return your pledge card at your earliest
convenience. Extra ACA envelopes can be found in the pews of the church.
ASCENSION THURSDAY - MAY 1
Forty days after His Resurrection from death, Jesus returned to His Father in
Heaven, as the apostles watched. But He was not abandoning them or us. He had
already made provisions to be physically and sacramentally present on earth for
all time in the Holy Eucharist. And He would continue to teach and guide us
through the church He established. And after returning to Heaven, He would send
the Holy Spirit to enlighten, guide, and strengthen us in accepting and living
His Teachings. Jesus ascended into Heaven, but he is still very much present
among us today - but we can only “see” him by faith. If we keep that Faith
viable and strong, and practice it faithfully, then we also will be eligible for
our place in Heaven that Jesus has gone there to prepare for us.
As Catholics, our obligation to attend Mass on Thursday is the same as it is on
a Sunday. To deliberately miss Mass without a good reason is a serious sin of
neglect. Check the Mass schedule for the time of Masses for Ascension Thursday.
FESTIVAL NEWS
1. NEEDED: NAMES OF ALL FESTIVAL VOLUNTEERS
Yes, all of us are aware that the great event for this parish, its Annual
Festival, is six weeks away. Certainly not too early for chairpersons of the
various concessions to be finalizing their lists of workers. THESE NAMES MUST BE
SUBMITTED TO THE RECTORY OFFICE NO LATER THAN FRIDAY, MAY 23RD so that the
Sunday bulletin of June 1st will carry the completed committee slates of names
and hours of assignment.
2. BASKET NEWS - WE NEED YOUR HELP!
We now have 30 baskets and/or commitments for baskets for the Festival! Our goal
is 150 so we have a way to go, but we are confident we will make it with YOUR
HELP! Donations can be in the form of a completed theme basket; items to be used
to complete a basket, or a monetary donation for the committee to complete a
basket. All donations should be dropped off at the home of Herm and Nancy Clauto
at 606 W. Sample Street, Ebensburg (please call before dropping off 472-6038).
If someone needs a basket picked up, call the Clautos’ for arrangements. For
anyone donating a completed theme basket, we are asking that you make a LIST OF
ARTICLES in the basket to avoid the necessity of tearing the basket down and
redoing it a second time. HELP US REACH THE GOAL OF 150 BASKETS SO THIS CAN BE A
VERY SUCCESSFUL FESTIVAL!! Thank you. The Basket Girls
3. FESTIVAL RAFFLE CHANCES - ONLY 6 WEEKS TO FESTIVAL
To a very large extent the parish depends upon this annual raffle to produce a
successful Festival. Each family is requested to personally sell or purchase at
least one book (20 chances) on attractive monetary prizes. Parishioners wishing
to be responsible for additional books of these chances may so claim them at the
rectory. The mailing will also include three raffle tickets from the Basket &
Raffle Committee. See article below for further information on Arts & Crafts
Raffle Tickets.
4. FESTIVAL FLEA MARKET
Pack up those unwanted items and donate them to the Festival Flea Market. No
stuffed animals, clothes or straw baskets. Mark boxes and drop them off in the
Church Library Room. Thanks!
5. FESTIVAL PRIZES NEEDED
Sr. Margie needs new items for the PICK-A- PRIZE Booth for men/women/kids of
every age. Drop prizes off in the Church Library Room. Thank you!
6. TURKEYS
Always appreciated are the donations of turkeys. Please consider the donation of
a turkey for the Festival dinner. We suggest that you bring donations to the
Church Cafeteria Mon-Fri from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
7. RAFFLE
Any senior citizen willing to sit and sell raffle chances for a few hours at the
Ebensburg malls, grocery stores, Bingo or booth at the Festival should contact
Jim Arnone at 472-9566; extra books of chances are available to any parishioner
at the rectory. Let the secretary know if you need an extra book or two. Please
return your sold books of chances to the rectory at your earliest convenience.
8. CALLING COMMITTEE
Each year parishioners receive a call asking for the consideration of an item
needed for the serving of 3000 dinners or the outside food concession stands.
Please be cooperative and supportive.
9. HIGH SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS
Any high school student who would like to obtain service hours by working at the
Festival Dinners is asked to call Karen Hurtack (472-6218) or Mary Lynn Stephens
(472-7054), or by working the Cotton Candy Booth is asked to called Fr. Matthew
(472-7244).
GRATITUDE FOR NOODLE VOLUNTEERS
The final of five sessions of noodle making occurred on April 23rd. It has been
a most satisfying and rewarding year for our parish based upon the generous
number of volunteers present for each session. Over 800 pounds of homemade
noodles are available for sale between now and the end of our Parish Festival.
Our prayerful gratitude for these and future volunteers giving of time and
talent to secure a most successful Festival Event.
THANK YOU, FR JIM SICHKO!
We are so grateful for the powerful preaching ministry of Fr. Jim Sichko who
spoke to a full church each evening of our Parish Mission.. And many thanks to
all who contributed food and service time to the nightly socials. Fr. Sichko
told us that members of his parish at St. Mark’s, Lexington KY, kept vigil
before the Blessed Sacrament 24 hours a day all three days of our mission. See
what Eucharistic Adoration and prayer can accomplish! May we “drop the stones”
that prevent us from receiving Christ’s love and mercy. May we ask each day for
the grace to “know who we are” in relationship to Christ Jesus. And may we
become “a people of hope,” stepping out in “strong leadership” to draw others
into a life of faith in Christ.
PARISH COUNCIL SURVEY
Copies are still available in the pews. We value your suggestions for future
planning to strengthen the spiritual life and activity of our parish. Drop in
survey box or collection basket this week.

celebrate together this great event for our Church.

CATHOLIC UPDATE: CHRIST OUR HOPE
This article looks at Pope Benedict’s new Encyclical, Spe Salvi, Saved in Hope.
This is his second universal Church encyclical, following God is Love written in
2005. Pope Benedict draws strong biblical links between faith and hope. His
opening paragraph states: “The present, even if it is arduous, can be lived and
accepted if it leads towards a goal...a goal great enough to justify the
journey.” Union with God, life eternal with the Risen Lord, is the goal that
inspires our hope and justifies the Christian journey. Hope is always about a
new situation, new beginnings. Love, not science, redeems people. “In this
sense, anyone who does not know God, even though they may entertain all kinds of
hope, is ultimately without the great hope that sustains the whole of life.”
That great hope can only be God “who encompasses the whole of reality and who
can show us what we, by ourselves, cannot attain.” God truly loves us, as
evidenced in the death and resurrection of Christ. And love will always give us
what we need.
